Plenum Cable

Plenum cables are cables that are required to pass NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), 262 (UL-910) CMP flame test requirements.

They have a fire retardant component that gives it an advantage over PVC cables, reducing the spread of flames and emitting less toxic smoke than non-plenum.

Installers sometimes have the option to use riser rated between floors but keep in mind that you can always substitute plenum for riser but you can’t go the other way.  For those who only want to stock, one type of cable plenum is the way to go.

Plenum cables are designed to be installed without conduit where air flow is present and safety is a concern.  Plenum performs better at higher and lower temperature ratings and harsh environments than other cables.

In addition, their outer diameter can be smaller with thinner insulation walls and jacketing requirements to meet voltage requirements than PVC items.

They can meet many different voltage and temperature requirements.  Typical voltage are 150, 300, 600 and 1000 volts.  Temperature can be from 75C for Plenum, 150C for fluorocopolymer or as high as 200 C for FEP Teflon.
